Your Guide to St. Patrick’s Day 2015 in Chicago

39964_largeSt. Patty’s day is coming Chicago!  Here are some Chicago events guaranteed to get you in an Irish mood.

Watch the River Turn Green:  A modern miracle.  For the past 43 years the Chicago river has been dyed green in March.  This year, the river will turn green at 9:30am on Saturday, March 14th.  The best viewing will be between Columbus and Wabash. FREE

2015 Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade: This annual parade steps off at 12 noon at Columbus and Balbo in Grant Park.  The viewing stand will be located by Buckingham Fountain.  FREE

St. Patrick’s Day Cruises: See the green river up close and personal on a boat cruise with an Irish buffet, festive music, and plenty of Guinness and Irish coffee.  Choose from Shoreline Cruises at 10am & 2pm or Spirit of Chicago Cruise Lines at 3pm.  $49-$49.90/person for adults.

South Side Irish Parade: A Chicago tradition since 1979, this parade is known by locals to get a bit rowdy, if that’s your sort of thing.  This year’s South Side Irish Parade will begin at noon on Sunday, March 15th at 103rd and Western Ave.  FREE

St. Patrick’s Day 5k & 8k: Formerly known as the Leprechaun Leap, this annual race touts the catch phrase “Everyone is CHIrish on St. Patrick’s Day”.  The race starts at 9:30am on Saturday, March 14th and continues with an after party at John Barleycorn.  Free entry with your race bib and there’s also a costume contest.  $47-$52.

Get Lucky Half Marathon & 7k: This race will be filled with the luck of the Irish on March 14th.  The race starts in Jackson Pack at 9am and runs along the beautiful South Shores of the Lake Front Path.

Eat, Drink & Be Merry: There are plenty of Irish pubs in Chicago that are perfect to make your home base for St. Patrick’s Day Revelry.  Here are our recommendations:

  • Fado’s Irish Pub:  Doors open at 7:30am on Saturday, March 14th with live music and Irish specials all day.  $10 cover.
  • The Kerryman:  Irish is always on the menu in this River North Pub.
  • Celtic Crossing:  Come be transported back to that magical land of green grass, Irish Lads & Lasses, and fantastic Guiness & conversation.
