You’ve met the one and you’re now engaged. You can’t wait to be married, but you’re not looking forward to all the planning, expense, and drama that can come with larger weddings? Sure, you could try a destination wedding, but you’ll be worried that close friends or family who can’t afford the big airline/hotel expense might pass on your big day.
What about just a short-term, last-minute wedding instead? While most engagements are lasting 13-24 months according to this infographic from Wedding Paper Divas, it’s still very possible to plan a wedding, of any size, in just a few months without the need for an expensive wedding planner. Check out our tips for planning a short-term or last-minute wedding.
Officiant: Today you can become an ordained minister online in about 10 minutes. Get a close relative or friend to officiate your vows.
Venue: This can actually be easy to book than you might think. Sure, many popular venues get booked well in advance, but if you are flexible with your date and creative with your venue, you can still book a great space just a few months out. Hyatt Regency McCormick Place has many last minute wedding venue deals in the coming months. You can also try online platforms such as Canceled Weddings to buy wedding contracts and packages at discounted prices from those who, sadly, had to cancel or re-schedule their weddings.
Dress: Sure, dress alterations can take weeks, but purchasing a wedding dress doesn’t have to take 7-10 months. There are plenty of gorgeous gowns you can buy off the rack, and save a lot of money doing so!
Cake: Get creative – have a friend who made an awesome cake for a friend or child’s birthday party? Invite them to create your wedding cake. They’ll be honored. You could also forgo the cake and do a beautiful cupcake or cookie display table instead.
Photographer: Photographers that specialize in weddings tend to be booked far in advance. Instead, try a friend who took those great vacation or family pics with their fancy new camera. Or try crowd-sourcing your wedding photos by hashtagging your wedding.
Bridesmaid Dresses: They don’t want to be forced into buying the dress anyway. Pick a color scheme and let them pic their dress of choice from any local store or boutique. Or if you really want them to all look the same, you can also pick a dress that is readily available in many sizes at a major department store or online and allow them to get any alterations on their own as needed. Your bridesmaids will love you for it anyway.
