What To Do On This Wintery Weekend

Tis the season to be jolly, and to take advantage of the amazing city of Chicago, and all that it offers during the holidays. It is the last weekend before Christmas and Kwanza, Hanukkah is in full-swing, and Festivus is right around the corner. Here are some of the things we are most looking forward to this upcoming weekend:

  • Caroling at CloudgateFriday, December 19, 2014 – It is the last one of the season; the fantastic Bella Voce chamber choir will be performing some favorite holiday songs, at Cloudgate (a.k.a. The Bean), from 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM. CIRQUE DREAMS HOLIDAZE
  • Cirque Dreams HolidazeFriday, December 19, 2014 – Sunday, December 21, 2014 – A variety show that will be sure to delight all ages, Cirque Dreams Holidaze is a true treat at The Chicago Theater. With amazing acrobatic acts, and music, and a multitude of beautiful costumes, this is something that the whole family can enjoy.
  • Selfies With SantaFriday, December 19, 2014 – Wednesday, December 24, 2014 – Want to see the best view of the city, and meet the “big guy” of the Christmas season? Santa will be stopping by for a visit in the Windy City, before he has to be back in the North Pole to get everyone’s gifts. Of course, his number one place to visit is the Willis Tower, because he, like the rest of us, is enamored by the beautiful city, and loves to see all of it decked out for Christmas.
  • CBS Sports ClassicSaturday, December 20, 2014 – Four of the best college basketball teams in the nation: Kentucky; North Carolina; Ohio State, and UCLA, are playing together in this inaugural showcase. Tickets are still available, and it is going to be a great set of games. More information can be found here.
  • Chicago Bears vs. Detroit LionsSunday, December 21, 2014 – It will be a jungle out there at Soldier Field when the Lions and the Bears (no Tigers – that’s a different sport) play one another.
  • 2014 Annual Music Box Christmas ShowFriday, December 19, 2014 – Sunday, December 21, 2014 – Two of the most beloved Christmas classics, It’s a Wonderful Life, and White Christmas, are screening throughout the weekend at the Music Box Theater. Showtimes and ticket information is available here.

#WeddingWednesday: Trends For the New Year

There have been a bunch of fun wedding trends that took off in 2014. As this year quickly comes to a close, we look back at some of our favorite trends, and look ahead to what we hope to see in the coming year.

Favorite Trends of 2014 That We Hope Stick Around In 2015

  • Lush, many petaled flowers: When it comes to flowers, the more petals the better. Garden Roses and Peonies were the flowers of the year, this year, seeing as how they are both incredibly fragrant, dramatic, and romantic. Here’s to hoping that brides continue to be as obsessed with these gorgeous flowers, as we are.
  • Family-style dining: This is a fun way to get your guests to interact with one another, and yet still be relaxed. Beautifully plated items being passed around is also a guaranteed conversation starter.
  • Fancy cake flavors driven by the season: Gone are the days of a wedding cake being a tiered white cake with frosting. Personalizing your cake flavor based upon the season is where it’s at (fingers crossed the same goes for next year, too)! Some of our favorite finds in the summer were light, fresh flavors like lemon cakes with lemon zest frosting, or chai tea latte. For winter, rich flavors like caramel apple cider, and chocolate with pralines won our hearts.Seasonal Wedding Cakes

Trends We Hope To See In 2015

  • Tiny tastes: When you see those appetizers go by, you want to sample them all, plus hit up the buffet line, and the open bar, but the struggle of only having two hands comes into play. So, why not make everything at the cocktail hour sample sized? The appetizers, and the drinks! Instead of glasses of beer, use flights, and offer samples of wines. It allows guests to try everything!

  • Throwback bands: Think along the lines of what you would see in a John Hughes’, or any other quintessential 80′s movie. A good band playing at an event can guarantee dancing, and help to really personalize your special songs.
  • #Selfies: Let’s face it, we’re obsessed with our Instagram’s, and documenting everything with a pithy caption, a few hashtags, and some emojis. We might as well embrace it! Get everyone at the wedding involved, and have them help create a fun album of pictures from the special day.

Be a trend setter, and let us know some of the things that are helping to make your special day even more unique! Leave us a comment, or Tweet us at @HyattMcCormick.

Meet The Team Monday: Meet Event Manager, Melissa Garretson

Melissa GarretsonMeet one of our marvelous Event Managers, Melissa Garretson.

Melissa has been with Hyatt for the last 11 years, and we are lucky enough to say that it has been at our property the entire time! She spent two years as the Director of Outlets, an additional three years as a Catering Manager, and has been an Event Manager for the past six and a half years. Her passion for the hospitality industry is rooted back to when she worked in a restaurant, from the age of fifteen; Melissa loved the fun atmosphere of the restaurant floor, and wanted to branch out into different aspects of hospitality, and was drawn in by the idea of working in Events.

A Chicago native, there is so much that Melissa loves about the city, whether it be the lakefront; the museums; the restaurants, or walking around the great neighborhoods. Melissa’s children are the most important thing in the world to her, and everything that she does is for them. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, especially playing with her kids, and going out to restaurants with her husband.

Melissa’s fun personality, along with the valuable insight that she has into the hospitality industry, ensures that she provides a memorable experience for all of her clients. She is a true benefit to our team here, and we are extremely glad to have her at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place.

#WeddingWednesday – Everybody Cut Footloose

Dancing is an integral part of any wedding – getting your wedding guests to join in on the party is essential to ensuring that your party is the talk of the town for years to come. Even though it may not be the “coolest” thing to do, people enjoy getting together to dance to those incredibly catchy, guilty pleasure tunes that play during the reception.

There are so many dances that are great for weddings, and we counted down our top five favorite things to dance to at a wedding:

1. The Cupid Shuffle – Cupid
What can be better than a song that gives you instructions, and repetitive instructions at that? It is the quintessential group dance for all ages.

2. Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It) – Beyonce
Queen Bey started a revolution with that black leotard, and those fierce hand movements. This dance works as a fun dance for the bridesmaids, and a funny spoof for the groomsmen.

3. Jump On It – Sir Mix-A-Lot
Popping your hips from side to side, and spinning around is too great to not do. And whenever you hear the city you are either in, or from, it is pretty exciting.

4. The Time Warp - Richard O’Brien
The song that got the party started in Rocky Horror Picture Show, is also a great throwback piece that provides incredibly helpful, simple instructions. How can anyone not want to do the Time Warp? “It’s just a jump to the left, and then a step to the right…”

5. Thriller – Michael Jackson
Quite possibly the most fantastic choreographed dance of all time. The King of Pop, Michael Jackson, created this classic, statement piece over 30 years ago, and it is still relevant and fun today.

So, cut loose, throw on your dancing shoes, and get the party started by playing some of these classic dance songs!

Weekend Update – Things To Do In Chicago, December 5-7, 2014

Despite what Loverboy said, not “Everybody’s Working For the Weekend”. This weekend, the Windy City is offering up a ton of fun, and exciting things to do, to not only celebrate the start of the holiday season, but to celebrate the fact that the weekend has finally arrived! Here is a list of things that we are most looking forward to doing this weekend:

  • December 5th – Joffrey Ballet: The Nutcracker: This is the first show of the season, in the Joffrey Ballet’s, and the Chicago Philharmonic’s annual performance of The Nutcracker. A tradition since the 1980′s, this classic, holiday ballet, is both a wonderful visual and auditory spectacle that should not be missed.
  • December 5th – Wilco: The hometown heroes kick off their six night stint, at the Riviera Theater, to celebrate their 20 years together, and the release of their first greatest hits album. Want to hear a specific song? Make a request on their website!
  • December 6th – The Santa Hustle 5KCan you think of a better way to get you into the holiday spirit than by taking part in a 5K that benefits the American Cancer Society, while dressed as Santa, and being surrounded by runners who are equally as festive?
  • December 6th – 101.9 The Mix: Miracle on State Street: Bringing together some of the hottest names in music right now, 101.9 The Mix, along with Sam Smith, Fitz and the Tantrums, and Mary Lambert, help to ring in the holiday season, at the Chicago Theater.
  • Christkindl Market – The largest open-air market in Chicago, this German market is the perfect place to get all of your authentic German items and food, as well as unique hand blow, and wooden ornaments.
  • Zoolights: Head on over to the Lincoln Park Zoo, to see the lights and the animals, and to enjoy ice skating on the zoo’s rink, along with a hot beverage.

#WeddingWednesday – A Hyatt Love Story

Tyler and BeckyOn this #WeddingWednesday, we wanted to celebrate one of our favorite couples in the hotel, who are getting married one month from today. Meet Tyler Song, one of our Sales managers, and Becky Pena, our Group Reservations Coordinator.

Tyler and Becky met five years ago, at the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa. In Food and Beverage at the time, Tyler always knew that Becky existed – he would see her as she clocked in each morning, on her way to Reservations, as the PBX (phones) supervisor. After his time in Food and Beverage, Tyler moved over to the Front Desk. One day, his phone was on the fritz, and he called over to PBX, where Becky came to his rescue.

From there, a friendship grew. On their first date, Tyler took Becky out for sushi, since she had never had it before, and they watched the classic Johnny Depp film, Benny and Joon. This has been their movie ever since.

In June 2013, Tyler was offered a Sales Manager position here with us, at the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place. Being the inseparable couple that they are, Becky, too, came, and joined the McCormick Place team, as the Group Reservations Coordinator. The two were engaged on March 6, 2014.

The love that these two have for each other, matches the love that this hotel has for them. Both Tyler, and Becky are incredible, fun, loving people, who deserve every happiness in the world. The Hyatt Regency McCormick Place Family is beyond thrilled that we get to share in their joy. Congratulations on your upcoming wedding, Tyler and Becky!
